The first two seasons of The Witcher has mainly consisted of a witcher named Geralt (Henry Cavill) who tries his best to care for a powerful orphaned princess named Ciri (Freya Allan). Now that the first five episodes of Season 3: Volume 1 were recently released and Volume 2 is near with the last three episodes, we get to see more of Geralt’s journey of protection over Ciri.

However, in Season 3, it’s not only Geralt who sees Ciri as a daughter, it’s also Yennefer (Anya Chalotra). They have essentially formed a family together and are on a mission to teach and keep Ciri safe. After watching Season 3: Volume 1, there are a few main reasons you will be enchanted to keep up with both volumes of Season 3.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Princess Ciri and Yennefer Struggle with Ciri’s Power/Chaos

In Season 2 of The Witcher, Princess Ciri was taught how to use her power/chaos by Yennefer. Yennefer was also shown to gain her power back at the end. In the beginning of Season 3: Volume 1, it is shown how Yennefer is struggling to teach Ciri how to control her power/chaos by herself to the point that she wants to take Ciri to Aretuza, where she was taught, in hopes that Ciri will finally learn successfully. Volume 1 also shows more of Yennefer using her power again for the first time in a while since it was returned. Although we don’t get to see Ciri master her power/chaos or Yennefer use much of her magic in Volume 1 perhaps we will in Volume 2. After all, Ciri is supposed to be special and Yennefer did barely get her power back. It will be intriguing to see what Volume 2 has in store for these two.

Ciri’s Father and His Reappearance

One of the biggest shocks at the end of Season 2 was that Ciri’s father, who now goes by the name of Emhyr (Bart Edwards), was shown to be both alive and the White Flame. He wasn’t shown too much in Volume 1. We still do not know a lot about him. It is mainly known that he wants his daughter back, appears to have a dark side to him, and according to Netfilx has a “play for domination of the Continent.” Ciri’s father is a mystery in the series right now that will hopefully soon get fully revealed. With Volume 2 coming out and much more for us to learn about her father’s reappearance, maybe in Volume 2 we’ll get to know more about him, his true intentions with Ciri, and what really happened to both her father and mother.

The Revelation about Vilgefortz

Volume 1 ended with yet another huge surprise that keeps us wondering what the whole truth is behind this grand revelation. Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu) is said in the series to be the person who’s been the one possibly helping Nilfgaard and behind Lydia (Aisha Fabienne Ross) and Rience (Chris Fulton). When Yennefer and Geralt put the pieces together and made this discovery, one of the key pieces was the bracelet he had given Tissaia (MyAnna Buring) because it was made of the same material as Lydia’s earrings. In the ending of the first volume, Yennefer is seen trying to locate Tissaia because she might be in danger. Therefore by watching Volume 2, it will most likely show what the whole truth is and what happens when Vilgefortz is confronted about everything.

Cavill’s Last Season as Geralt

It was announced that Cavill will no longer be playing the role of Geralt in the series after Season 3 ends, and I have to admit this was very heartbreaking to hear. For many fellow fans out there who have kept up with every season up until now, we have been used to seeing Cavill do outstandingly well in playing this role from the beginning. It’s hard to imagine another actor playing this role as well as Cavill did. Geralt was a character who was shown to be emotionless in the beginning of the series. In Volume 1, we see how he has transformed to trying to be more empathetic so that he may be a good father figure for Ciri. The way Cavill embodied this change to Geralt’s character was nice to see as a fan of the series. If you want to witness Cavill’s amazing job as Geralt for one last time before the role is recast with Liam Hemsworth for Season 4, Volume 1 and 2 are definitely worth the watch.

This series has done well in its previous seasons, and after watching Volume 1 of Season 3 I’m certain this entire season will too. Volume 1 will leave you bewitched, therefore watching Volume 2 is a must watch. If you want to binge out on the whole series before Season 3: Volume 2 releases, all previous seasons are currently viewable on Netflix.

Season 3: Volume 2 of The Witcher will be released on Netflix on July 27, 2023.
