Today it was announced that prolific actress and Oscar nominee Angela Bassett, has been cast in Marvel’s Black Panther film scheduled for release in 2018. Bassett will play the role of Ramonda, T’Challa’s step-mother also known as the Queen Mother. Ramonda married T’Challa’s father T’Chaka after his previous wife N’Yami died giving birth to T’Challa. Currently the character can be seen in Ta-Nehisi Coates’ run of Black Panther.
Directed by Ryan Coogler (“Fruitvale Station,” “Creed”), “Black Panther” stars Chadwick Boseman in the title role alongside Michael B. Jordan, Forest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, and Florence Kasumba. The film arrives in theaters on February 16, 2018.
