Anime NYC 2017 Announcements

The first annual Anime NYC took place November 17 – 19 in Midtown New York. Over 20,000 anime and manga fans attended the convention at the Jacob Javits Center. If you missed it, no worries! Following is a list of news and announcements made that weekend.

CRUNCHYROLL

Crunchyroll is a leading streaming platform for Japanese anime and Asian entertainment content. Crunchyroll brings fans more than 15,000 hours of content and programming that airs day and date with Japan’s schedule.

Crunchyroll is now available on VRV; an app that offers a family of streaming services also including Funimation and Rooster Teeth amongst others for one price.

  • Gaming Announcement:

Back in August, Crunchyroll announced a new part of their business that would expand their presence into anime gaming. At Anime NYC, they announced a new mobile game which will launch early 2018 under Crunchyroll Games for the series, “Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?”.

  • New shows added to Crunchyroll:
    • Noein: To Your Other Self

12-year old Haruka and her friend Yu are approached by a member of the “Dragon Knights” from the future who believes she’s the keystone to ending an interdimensional battle.

    • Yu Yu Hakusho

Yusuke Urameshi, 14-year old delinquent, manages to commit a selfless act and die in the process. He’s rewarded a second chance at life; but now must serve as a Spirit Detective, tracking down demons and humans who attempt to rule over the three realms of reality.

    • Ouran High School Host Club

Haruhi attends the elite Ouran High School surrounded by wealthy teens which she is not. One day, she accidentally breaks an expensive vase owned by Ouran High School’s host club (an extracurricular club where the high school boys host the high school girls), requiring her to join the club to pay her debt.

    • Star Blazers 2199

In the year 2199, humanity is on the brink of extinction. The Yamato battleship has one year to defeat the enemy, Gamilas, and save humanity before it ends.

    • A Place Further than the Universe – Coming in January 2018

An original anime about a group of high school girls who go on an expedition to Antarctica.

FUNIMATION

Funimation, based in Texas, is one of the top distributors of anime and foreign entertainment content in North America; with a knack for English language dubs. They also have a streaming platform for fans to watch anime; some titles are offered in dub while the show simultaneously airs in Japan.

TV Announcement:

  • The new hit anime series, “Black Clover,” will be airing on Toonami starting December 2, 2018.
  • Black Clover takes place in a world where everyone possesses magic except for one 15-year-old, Asta, who unfortunately was born without any magic. However, that doesn’t stop him from setting off on his journey to become the Wizard King.

Gaming Announcement:

  • Funimation Entertainment is releasing a new game for the anime, Seven Deadly Sins, in 2018.

Limited Edition DVDs (Available Now):

    • This is the first time Fruits Basket is being offered as a DVD/ Blu-ray combo.
    • Extras include Textless Opening & Closing Songs, Artwork, English Cast interview, Director interview and more.
    • Extras include 88-page art book with original character art, Deku figure keychain, notebook signed by All Might and more.
    • The first time Seasons one and two are offered inside one box.
    • Extras include chipboard box, art book, fabric posters, and OVAs.

GKIDS

GKIDS, based in New York, is a leading distributor of animated films worldwide (not only Japan) for both adult and family content. They handle all North American theatrical releases for the Studio Ghibli library and release those titles on DVD.

New Theatrical Release Announcement:

  • Mary And the Witch’s Flower” releases on January 19, 2018 in North American theaters; both as subtitled and dubbed.
  • Features English voice actors such as Kate Winslet, Jim Broadbent, and Ruby Barnhill.
  • Produced by Studio PONOC, an affiliate with Studio Ghibli, and directed by Academy Award Winning Director, Hiomasa “Maro” Yonebayashi.
  • This film is a return to the form of fantasy genre often seen in Studio Ghibli films. Mary And the Witch’s Flower is based on Mary Stewart’s 1971 children’s book The Little Broomstick about a girl named Mary, who discovers a flower that grants magical powers only for one night.
  • There will be a special one-night premiere event on January 18th featuring a Q&A with the director.

    • December 15, 2017 – Theatrical Release
    • A dark dystopian film from Spanish visionary Alberto Vázquez, and Pedro Rivero. Stranded on an island, Dinky and her fellow teenage friends attempt to escape in the hope of finding a better life.
  • Satellite Girl and Milk Cow
    • A satellite girl, cow, and roll of toilet paper go an adventure to fix the world.
    • February 2018 – VRV Release

Spring 2018 – Theatrical Release

Summer 2018 – Home Video Release

  • Mind Game
    • This film is being released for the first time on VRV December 22, 2017 to get ready for two new feature films coming from the creator, Masaaki Yuasa.

Kodansha, based in Tokyo, is Japan’s leading publishing house founded in 1909. They published titles such as Akira, The Ghost in the Shell and Attack on Titan.

Coming Soon to Print:

    • A gender bending romantic tale that plays off the story, Sleeping Beauty.
  • Again!! By Mitsurou Kubo (from the co-creator of “Yuri!!! on ICE”)
    • Coming to print in February 2018.
    • After accidental fall Kinichiro, now a senior about to graduate high school, wakes up in the past as a high school freshman. Determined to do things differently, he joins the ouendan team (a sport in Japan that’s like cheerleading but with men).
  • Golosseum By Baba Yasushi
    • Coming to print Spring 2018
    • A martial arts political parody action manga. With the invention of “peacemakers” (a new material which renders people immune to all weapons) battles ensue.
  • Tokyo Tarareba Girls By Akiko Higashimura
    • Available now digital. Coming to print in July 2018.
    • Rinko is thirty-something and single. She vows that she’ll be married by time it’s the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
  • Grand Blue Dreaming By Kenji Inoue and Kimitake Yoshioka
    • Available now in digital. Coming to print in July 2018.
    • This story follows college student, Lori Kitahara, as he attends school in a seaside town full of diving beautiful girls and shenanigans.

You can watch anime and read digital manga for free at Viz.com. They also have a new partnership with Pluto TV, an pp that now carries an All-Day Anime channel.

  • New Manga Announcement:
    • “That Blue Sky Feeling” manga is being adapted into an anime series coming June 2018. It is a coming of age teen LGBT series about a 17-year old boy, Noshiro Dai, who transfers to a new high school and befriends a loner, Sanada Kou.
  • Current Manga Announcements:
    • My Hero Academia” graphic novel will speed up its distribution in 2018, so that each volume releases quicker and the anime episodes can be produced faster.
    • A new My Hero Academia series is coming in 2018 called My Hero Academia: Vigilantes.
  • New Film Announcements:
    • “Mazinger Z: Infinity”, the mecha anime film, will be released in North America in 2018.
    • Infini-T Force,“ the anime series commemorating the 55th anniversary of Tatsunoko Production, is getting a film coming to North America in 2018.
  • Limited Edition DVDs:

Available Now. This set includes 26 episodes on 4 Blu-ray discs.

Extras includes 168-page booklet, 9 art cards, and more.

    • Willem wakes up several hundred years later to an Earth where humans have gone extinct by “beasts”. Along with the female fairy warriors he continues his fight against beasts.
