Black Girl In Suburbia is a feature documentary that looks into the experiences of Black girls growing up in predominately White communities. This is a different look into suburbia from the perspective of women of color. This film explores through professional and personal interviews the conflict and issues Black girls have relating to both White and Black communities.

Melissa Lowery was born in Portland, Oregon and raised in West Linn, Oregon. She graduated from West Linn high school in 1993. Melissa moved to Los Angeles California in 1996 and worked at Paramount Studios on the television show, Entertainment Tonight. She moved back to Oregon with her husband and two children in 2005 and began working for the City of Hillsboro Parks and Recreation programs. A few years after being back in Oregon, Melissa decided to enroll into Pacific University in Forest Grove to complete her degree. She graduated from Pacific in 2010 with her Bachelors in Media Arts.

Melissa along with her husband Jason and daughters Jayla (12) and Che (9) reside in Hillsboro, Oregon.
