In order to understand the complex mechanics of Hentai, it’s best to get acquainted with the ins and outs of what makes this unique genre of pornography so popular among its fans (not just in Japan, but outside of it as well) by exploring it’s non-pornographic counterparts: Anime, and Manga (Japanese comics/graphic novels). Part of the misconception surrounding Manga and Anime, and Hentai, is that it’s the exact same thing. Frankly, I can’t understand in the least how anyone could ever confuse them.

Meanwhile, sitting on the Throne of these misconceptions, and giggling like a twelve-year-old in Sex-Ed, is the notion that Manga and Anime are perceived by many Westerners as “cartoons”; ergo, a form of media entertainment with its demographic geared towards the younger generations. This is due to the often displayed face of Anime featuring youthful characters with big eyes, adventurous storylines, and brightly colored graphics.

Seriously, how can anything this adorable and funny be created for anything but the enjoyment of children?

A staple of the Anime and Manga world, regardless of genre or storyline, is the concept of transformation (whether physically, or within the spectrum of overall character development).

While the word Hentai itself literally means “pervert”; and is an abbreviated form of  hentai seiyoku, meaning “perverse sexual desire”, the word “Hentai” originally meant “transformation”/ “metamorphosis” and had nothing to do with sexuality.

However, as an adjective, and in the context of perverse sexual desire, Hentai is derived from the two words “hen”, meaning “strange”, “weird”, “odd”, etc, and “tai”, which can translates into “appearance”.

It’s ultimately referring to the transformation of Manga and Anime into something pornorgraphic for sexual stimulation and arousal.

Nearly every, single, mainstream pornography site has a section for Hentai, and of course there are sites dedicated explicitly to hosting Hentai that can be enjoyed in book, video game, or animated form.

From Harlem to Hanoi, Hentai’s biggest appeal is that unlike regular pornography, there are no limits as to what the human body can give and take. If you have a particular sexual “yum”, I guarantee it exists in hentai form.

In my previous article, I listed the three, general categories Hentai is comprised of (but not limited to)–

Heterosexual (Girl with Boy)

minoseimari
Imari and Minase (Bible Black)

Yaoi (Boy with Boy)–

Seiji and Sono (Sensitive Pornograph)

Yuri (Girl with Girl)

Luka and Miku (Vocaloid)*

*-Vocaloid is actually not a Hentai series, but you’d never guess otherwise.

This may come as a surprise to you, but there is in fact a fourth metacategory that is far more popular than the aforementioned three combined. If “tentacle hentai” was your guess, you’re sorely mistaken. It’s Futanari (remember that fun little Sailor Moon / DragonBall scenario from the introductory article?).

If you’re new to the world of hentai, it’s quite easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer vastness of it. Much of this rings true regarding the categorical jargon and terminology. Below, I have categorized an abbreviated list of popular genres and themes you often find in Hentai.

A

  • Ahegao
  • Ashikoki

“Ahegao” literally means “weird face”, and is used to describe the varying degrees of overwhelming pleasure as depicted on the face of the receiver (normally). Some of the hallmark traits of the Ahegao face include a fully extended tongue with gratuitous amounts of saliva and/or sweat, a completely delirious look in the eye (presuming the eyes aren’t completely rolled back into the eye sockets), tears of pleasure, and a raging blush.

There are degrees:

(Here’s a fun suggestion, readers: Let’s see your best Ahegao face. Send submissions to jaxjaxattaxx@gmail.com , along with your twitter/instagram handle, and I’ll be happy to run them in an upcoming Honey Brown Hentai piece. Happy Ahegao-ing.)

Ashikoki:

Ashikoki refers the the theme and genre of foot jobs. If this needs further clarification, it’s like a handjob, except with your feet.  And if you don’t know what a handjob is, you’re clearly lost; where is your mother? It’s past your bedtime.

More than not, the theme of Ashikoki works hand-in-hand (foot-in-foot?) with the wildly popular theme of stockings, pantyhose, and the like, with pleasure being derived from the feeling of the soft material of whatever is covering the foot/feet, or just from the feet in general (with toes often portrayed as having the same amount of nimble dexterity as fingers).

B:

  • Bukkake

“Bukakke” (aside from being one of the more well-known terms of Hentai even if you have never seen hentai) is the noun form of “bukkakeru”, which can mean “to shower”, “heavily splash”, or “to pour”, and has been widely accepted (even in Western porn) as the definition of men/Futanari/or whatever has a phallic-looking appendage, ejaculating onto the recipient.

This theme can also be found in a strictly female-centered storyline, with large breasts replacing penises and breastmilk used in the place of semen. This brings us to the theme of Bakunyuu which literally means “explosive breasts”.

It’s not to be confused with Oppai, which generally refers to (usually large) breasts. This common theme is found in all aspects of Anime, Manga, and Hentai, and one of it’s most recognized tropes.

An episode of Pokemon was never released in America due to James, a male member of the villainous duo known as  Team Rocket, using a pair of oversized inflatable breasts as part of his disguise in a bikini contest while mocking eleven or twelve-year old Misty for her lack of boobage.

C:

  • Chikan

The genre of Chikan stretches to all forms of anime, manga, and hentai, and reality. It refers to the act of groping, molesting, and fondling an often unwilling someone; usually on a crowded train or area where it’s easier to getting away with copping a quick feel, and by  often perpetrated some creepy old pervert wearing a business suit.

Androgynous AltModel (and Pokemon Master) Jacqueline-Elizabeth (AKA Kurosune of the SuicideGirls, and Cosplay Deviants) was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, developed a lifelong love of reading and writing at ages two and three, and started playing video games when she was six.

Upon moving to Los Angeles, California, Jacqueline scored her first writing gig as Nerdy But Flirty (run by gaming legend SarahTheRebel and later passed down to Kelsey’s Marquet), and later recruited by the Jace Hall Show (now TwinGalaxiesLive!) as also not only their first black writer, but their first female one as well.

Her interests include writing, reading manga, gaming, watching anime, cosplaying, increasing her number of tattoos, and rainy days in bed journaling.
