Miles Morales is the Spider-Man of the Marvel universe. The Ultimate universe is ending and Miles will take his place in his own post Secret Wars title.  The book will be written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Sara Pichelli. Being a Black Latina kid born in Queens, I relate to Miles. I cried when I read his first issue so seeing him take over as the ‘main’ Spider-Man of the Marvel Universe pretty much made my cold, dark fangirl heart grow 3 sizes bigger. I was especially touched by this quote from Bendis’ interview with the New York Daily News

“Our message has to be it’s not Spider-Man with an asterisk, it’s the real Spider-Man for kids of color, for adults of color and everybody else”.

Monday, news broke that Ava DuVernay has been tapped to direct Marvel’s Black Panther. This story has yet to be confirmed by DuVernay or Marvel but based on the buzz this story has received there is a strong likelihood that confirmation will soon arrive. DuVernay is best known for directing Selma and I’m excited to see what she’s going to do with this property. In her hands, all of my doubts for this movie will float away. Why the early hire? It’s being reported that she will be on the set of Captain America: Civil War which is filming right now in Atlanta. Black Panther will make his first appearance in this movie. Black Panther is slated to be released on July 6, 2018 and will star Chadwick Boseman in the titular role.
