BOOM! Studios has consistently been turning out some very cool female based content over the past few years. Books like Lady Castle, Goldy Vance, and various Adventure Time miniseries, are crafting stories that are new reader, and female friendly.

Misfit City is poised to be another fun female-led series from the company. Set in the small town of Cannon Cove Oregon, Misfit City spotlights the daily lives of young teens living in a town known as the filming location for a famous, popular movie, The Gloomies.

Natives Wilder, Macy, Karma, and Dot, face the daily challenge of not letting the tourists drive them mad.

Their day-to-day life is shaken up by the death of Captain Denby, a local who leaves a mysterious chest in the care of Macy and the local museum.

The girls find a strange map in the trunk, and though they are quick to brush off the possibility of it being a true treasure map, the theft of the trunk later that evening makes them realize something deeper is happening.

The creators’ goal in this series is to show that not only boys are up for a good adventure. The fact that the girls are a little older adds a nice element of skepticism and deeper thought processes to their actions.

I also liked how the girls each have very distinct personalities without falling into the stereotype roles of rocker, activist or nice girl.

I’m intrigued enough by this first issue to see how the story plays out.
