Since Street Fighter II was released back in 1991, players have speculated about what it would be like if the two iconic Street Fighters Ryu and Chun-Li every got together romantically. This speculation has resulted in a steady stream of Ryu/Chun-Li fan art, fanfictions, and more than a few doujinshi, being produced over the last three decades. But now, after more than thirty years, a group of fans are finally making an effort to produce a Ryu/Chun-Li book they hope will be the world’s definitive work on the pairing.
Headed by Canadian-born and permanent Japanese resident, Sean Anderson, the Ryu X Chun-Li Project has been working since January 1st, 2013 to produce a tasteful and exciting story that finally brings Ryu and Chun-Li together. And the work they are producing is no mere doujinshi. On top of its 103 page main book which should be finished this year, there are over seventy pages of Ryu/Chun-Li fan art and mini-comics donated by over 40 Ryu/Chun-Li fan artists from around the globe, and they are still accepting more!
There is also an attraction video on Youtube, a blog with over fifty entries showcasing the project’s progress, and a Facebook page full of Ryu/Chun-Li art and cosplay from all over the Internet.
Even more exciting, the project plans to pitch its book to Canadian Company and Street Fighter comics licensee holder UDON Entertainment in hopes UDON will help the project pitch their book to CAPCOM, and, with CAPCOM’s approval, the book ultimately becoming a non-canon special issue that would be published under UDON’s label. “We don’t wish to interfere with official CAPCOM or UDON Entertainment Street Fighter canon.
Instead we hope to impress UDON and CAPCOM enough to agree to publish our work as a one shot “What if…?” story. A story that would bring their two most iconic Street Fighter characters together in one book to excite and satisfy fans all over the world with a story fans have waited over thirty years to read. Alone, Ryu and Chun-Li are formidable. Together, they would be unbeatable! And we hope after seeing our hard work, UDON and CAPCOM will feel the same way…for one book at least.”
