The highly anticipated trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine is finally here and social media is in a frenzy. The two and a half minute trailer gives us just enough to feed our excitement, all while not spoiling too much. For months, there was much speculation surrounding the film’s plot and villain, all of which seem to have been somewhat revealed. Perhaps the most important piece worth celebrating with the release of this project is the marrying of Fox’s X-Men films into the MCU. You might recall we first got a team up of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as their respective characters in the 2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Since then, fans have been begging to see the pair reconnect. In September of 2022, Reynolds posted a clip to his socials and YouTube channel announcing the upcoming third installment would tap Jackman to reprise his iconic role.

A few weeks ago, we were treated to a 9 minute clip at CinemaCon that gave us a glimpse of Wade celebrating his birthday with his friends prior to being whisked away by the TVA. In the hilarious bit, we even have a moment where Deadpool grabs the camera to excitedly yell, “Suck it, Fox. We’re going to Disneyland!”. The footage also shows several screens with Captain America and Thor displayed as though they are being watched on their timeline.

Cassandra Nova
There is so much to take away from the trailer, especially for those paying attention to every single detail. Most notably, we get a look at Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, sister to Professor Charles Xavier. She has the same powers as her brother, but her motives are used for destruction and evil. It appears she is the villain, as a scene shows her quite literally controlling Wolverine’s physical actions. This marks the first live action appearance of Cassandra.
The Classic Suit
While we got quite a spoiler on Twitter a few weeks ago from CinemaCon, we now have the official look at Wolverine’s classic sleeveless yellow and blue suit. The trailer shows us most of the suit in action while Jackman and Reynolds are tussling in what we can assume to be Loki’s Void. It is still unclear if Tom Hiddleston will show up as the mischievous character, but it wouldn’t be too surprising seeing how the TVA is part of this “multiverse”.
A Leap into a Portal
One of the final shots of the trailer shows us Deadpool and Wolverine jumping into a portal much like we’ve seen in previous films associated with Doctor Strange. Although there is no sign of who opened said void, it leads us to believe that this is the manner in which the Marvel Cinematic Universe is tied to the original X-Men characters.

Ant-Man’s Helmet
At last, we have an Avenger joining the third installment of the franchise and it comes to us in the form of Scott Lang’s large Ant-Man helmet. It appears this is where Cassandra Nova and her team have set up camp for their villainous headquarters. During this scene, if you look closely behind Nova, there appears to be a set of wheels reminiscent of Professor X’s wheelchair. While it is unlikely that we get a cameo from Paul Rudd (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania saw some low performing box office numbers), it wouldn’t be completely out of left field to have his name thrown around a time or two.

The Return of More Familiar Faces
There is truly so much to unpack throughout the trailer, but one shot is worth pausing to examine. When we see Ant-Man’s helmet, it is clear that there are several known mutants standing outside of it. Kelly Hu’s Lady Deathstrike (X-Men United) and Jason Flemyng’s Azazel (X-Men: First Class) make their return and introduction into the MCU. While there are a slew of others visible, these are the two that seem rather obvious and for certain. A closer look would reveal what seems to be Ray Park’s Toad and Dania Ramirez’s Callisto from X-Men: The Last Stand. After much chatter online, Tyler Mane’s Sabertooth is now confirmed to be in Deadpool & Wolverine, spicing things up in the combat and fight sequence department.
Overall, the trailer is full of F bombs, a drug reference, and a shot to the crotch that firmly remind the viewers this is an R rated flick. Even though Disney owns Marvel, this is NOT for kids, and it’s perfect just the way it is. It’s a no-brainer that this might possibly be the biggest film of the year, with Dune 2 being the only competition so far. Both Deadpool and X-Men have massive fan bases that will show up and show out when Deadpool & Wolverine releases in theaters July 26th. Could we get something special at this year’s San Diego Comic Con? Would make perfect sense, seeing how this year’s convention runs from July 25th to the 28th.
