Reboots are a slippery slope with so many fans and with nerds especially. We’re purists and we love our canon. However, in some cases, exceptions can be made and Ocean’s 8 is looking quite promising to be a film we want to check out this summer. With stars such as Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter it’s kind of difficult to turn away from this film featuring these heavyweights.
In the film, Danny Ocean’s estranged sister, Debbie, attempts to pull off the heist of the century at New York City’s star-studded annual Met Gala. Her first step is to assemble the perfect crew: Lou, Daphne Kluger, Amita, Tammy, Constance, Eight Ball, and Rose.
Ocean’s 8 also stars James Corden as an insurance investigator trying to put the pieces together, and Richard Armitage as Kluger’s unwitting date at the Gala.
Gary Ross (“Seabiscuit,” “The Hunger Games”) directed Ocean’s 8 from a screenplay he co-wrote with Olivia Milch, story by Ross. Steven Soderbergh and Susan Ekins produced the film. Michael Tadross, Diana Alvarez, Jesse Ehrman and Bruce Berman served as executive producers, with Milch co-producing.
Ross’s behind-the-scenes team included director of photography Eigil Bryld (“In Bruges”), production designer Alex DiGerlando (“Beasts of the Southern Wild”), Oscar-nominated editor Juliette Welfling (“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”), Oscar-winning editor William Goldenberg (“Argo”), costume designer Sarah Edwards (“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”), and composer Daniel Pemberton (“Steve Jobs”). Based on characters created by George Clayton Johnson & Jack Golden Russell.
However, after watching this trailer, one thing is for certain. I am in desperate need of more Rihanna. I’m curious to see her role in the film and find it interesting that she’s got this bohemian Brooklyn-hipster vibe to her look as opposed to looking like the glam girl that I would expect her to be. A role reversal that has my interest piqued and I don’t care what anyone says — I’m here for the all-female Ocean’s 8 heist film. Just be sure to give us more Rihanna, please!
Ocean’s 8 released by Warner Bros is in theaters June 8th.
