The critically acclaimed New York Times Bestseller The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas, is now being adapted into a film. The book, and now film, is about a young female named Starr Carter. Carter has to juggle two worlds – one is the poor, black neighborhood she lives in, and the other is the rich (mostly) white prep school she attends. When Carter loses her best friend to a police shooting, she finds herself facing pressures from her community and realizes that it is only right for her to use her voice for good in order to create a change.
The Hate U Give is a film that showcases the problems that people of color are facing today in relation to police brutality. So many have lost their best friends, their children, their family because of police brutality and gun violence. This story is one that, unfortunately, someone somewhere in America can relate to.
The film will be starring the young activist and actress known for her role in “Everything is Everything”, Amandla Stenberg. She will be playing Starr Carter. Household names such as Regina Hall, Common, and our lovely unapologetically awkward sister Issa Rae are all cast in the film. Additional cast members include Russell Hornsby, Anthony Mackie and Sabrina Carpenter among others.
George Tillman Jr., director of Soul Food and Notorious, is the director of The Hate U Give. The screenplay is by Tina Mabry (Insecure, Mississippi Damned) and Audrey Wells (Under the Tuscan Sun). There’s a lot of great names involved in the creation of this film and we at BGN are looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
The Hate U Give will open in theaters this Fall on October 19th. While you wait, grab the book and see what all the hype is about.
