The fall season is the best time for Blerds. Why? Because you can fully express your fandom by dressing up as your favorite character for Halloween. This year, movies and series have given us ample inspiration for costume ideas.

Here are seventeen Halloween costume ideas for Black girls.

1. Rhaena or Baela Targaryen, House of the Dragon

If you want a costume that you can re-wear at the next Comic-Con, Rhaena or Baela Targaryen from House of the Dragon are great fits. To pull off this look, focus on dark reds, long dresses, the iconic white wig, and a cape.

2. Storm, X-Men ’97

Storm from X-Men ’97 is powerful and fashionable. One of her most well-known looks is her skin-tight all-white suit with her radical fohawk. You can’t go wrong dressing up as this superhero.

3. Queen Charlotte, Bridgerton

Are you a Bridgerton fan? Dressing up as Queen Charlotte on Halloween can give you a small taste of royal life. You can also choose to play the younger or older version of the queen.

If you’re unsure where to get your Victorian-era threads, you can check out the Selkie collection.

4. Shirley Chisholm

Dressing up as a fictional character is expected, but you can also dress up as a historical figure. A Shirley Chisholm costume is an excellent excuse for vintage shopping and pulling out your curling rods.

5. Simone Biles

We all want to be her. Yet the GOAT Simone Biles is in a league of her own. The best we can do is honor her greatness by dressing up as her for Halloween. Find a leotard, throw your hair back into a ponytail with your edges out and free, and you’ve got an original look. Lastly, don’t forget to throw a gold medal around your neck. You can even sport a goat necklace if you want to get fancy.

8. Kamala Harris

Vice President Kamala Harris is a great costume idea if you want to keep it classy this Halloween. All you need is a pantsuit in whatever color matches your skin tone. You can even walk around with a coconut or coconut water as a play on her infamous falling out of a coconut tree joke.

9. Zendaya, Challengers

If you want a cute but tasteful costume, the tennis-playing version of Zendaya from Challengers is an excellent choice. Throw on a tennis outfit, and you’re good to go. Bonus points if you carry a racket as you strut in your outfit.

10. Janine Teagues, Abbott Elementary

Why not dress up as everyone’s favorite teacher this Halloween? This can be a fun costume to play with, as we’ve seen Janine go through subtle but significant wardrobe changes throughout the seasons. There are many outfits to work with, from long printed skirts to turtleneck sweaters. You can also go as Janine with a side part or Janine with a middle part.

11. Halle Bailey, The Little Mermaid

You can wear this costume in two ways. To pull off the human look, consider using a flowing light blue or sea-colored dress with a corset. You can even wear a long-sleeve white blouse with a corset on top and a loose skirt. Lastly, add a headband or ribbon for the final touch.

You can get by with a purple tube top or bikini top for the mermaid look. A long, tight, sequined turquoise skirt will do for the mermaid tail.

12. Beyoncé, Cowboy Carter

If you’ve attended one of Beyoncé’s concerts this year, you’ve already dressed up for her. Why not dress up as her this Halloween? There are many different looks, but as long as you sport a cowboy hat and some blinged-out accessories, you can pull it off. Extra points if you wear a blonde wig and pull off Beyoncé’s strut.

13. Zendaya, Dune

Another relatively simple costume to put together is Zendaya from Dune. The key is to dress entirely covered in gray and black outerwear. You can add knee and elbow pads for a more rugged look. To top it off, drape a thin head scarf over your head. If you want to go all in, add a pretend breathing tube to your nose and pop in some blue contacts.

14. Zoe Kravitz or Halle Berry, Cat Woman

Cat Woman is a classic, sexy, sleek costume that will never get old. You can decide whether to dress up as Zoe Kravitz or stick to the Halle Berry version. Either way, you can’t go wrong with a black leather bodysuit.

15. Lupita Nyong’o, Us

If you love Halloween because of all the ways to get creepy and scary, this could be a costume for you. Lupita Nyong’o gave us two outstanding performances as the tethered and untethered version of Adelaide in Us.

For the tethered version, you only need a red jumpsuit, a brown biker glove, and maybe a pair of scissors if you want to creep people out.

For the non-tethered Adelaide, wearing a long-sleeved white shirt cut up, dirtied, or bloodied will suffice.

16. Penny Proud, The Proud Family

Like most Black girls who grew up in the 1990s, Penny Proud from The Proud Family was either your best friend, your hero, or a combination of both. Why not honor this character by dressing up as her for Halloween?

Throw on a cute pink shirt with a pink cardigan, and you’re good to go.

17. Sid, The Bear

Dressing up as Sid, from the Emmy-winning series The Bear is an easy costume to put together with limited resources, yet it’s interesting enough to gain attention. Grab a white collared shirt, a blue apron, and a headscarf, and you’re good to go.

Halloween is my favorite holiday for many reasons. It’s a time when adults can be kids by dressing up, going to haunted houses, and expressing their imagination. It’s also a time to be creative and try on a different persona for the night. Hopefully, this list inspires you to dress up as something this Halloween.
