In Newborn, David Oyelowo takes on one of his most emotionally demanding roles yet, portraying a man fighting to reclaim his life after enduring years of isolation.
Directed and written by Nate Parker, Newborn follows Chris after seven years in solitary confinement. Though he is physically free, his mind remains trapped, turning his return home into an internal battlefield. The film also stars Olivia Washington, Barry Pepper, and Jimmie Fails.

In an interview with Black Girl Nerds, Oyelowo opened up about the psychological depth required to bring Chris Newborn to life, a character shaped as much by love as by trauma.
At the heart of Oyelowo’s performance is a stark reality about solitary confinement. “Studies have shown after 13 days, you’re never quite the same again mentally,” Oyelowo shared, emphasizing the irreversible psychological toll. That insight became a guiding force in shaping Chris’ fractured mental state.
When asked how he approached portraying someone who is physically free but mentally imprisoned, Oyelowo described grounding himself in the character’s humanity first. “The things about Chris Newborn that I was able to relate to were him as a father, him as a husband, him as a brother,” he explained. “But the element that required the deepest dive for me was the feelings of isolation, both literal and mental.”
To authentically capture that experience, Oyelowo turned to research and real-life conversations. One of the most impactful was with Richard Rosario, who was wrongfully convicted of murder and spent 20 years in prison, including seven in solitary confinement. That firsthand account helped Oyelowo understand not just the mechanics of isolation, but its lasting psychological imprint.

Yet Newborn is not solely defined by darkness. At its core, the film is a love story. Chris’ journey is driven by his desire to reconnect with his wife and son, the latter played by Aiden Stoxx, who has become non-verbal due to the trauma inflicted on their family.
“That offset the darkness,” Oyelowo noted, pointing to the emotional anchor that keeps Chris moving forward. “This is also a man who is trying to get back to a connection with those he loves.”
With Newborn, Oyelowo continues to demonstrate his commitment to complex, layered storytelling. The film examines incarceration and it interrogates what it means to truly be free, and whether healing is possible when the mind has been pushed beyond its limits.
Newborn will be released theatrically on April 10th exclusively at AMC Theatres
