Have You Considered Using ChatGPT to Plan Your Next Trip? Here’s How to Plan a Trip Using AI

Tripadvisor, Pinterest, Instagram, and travel agents: there are many ways to plan your next trip. Yet using AI can make your trip planning easier.

If you’ve been active in society for the past year or so, you’ve heard of ChatGPT. It is one of the latest creations of AI that is being used for content creation, marketing, and even trip planning.

Yes, ChatGPT can make the logistical side of travel planning easier, and here is how.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a more humanlike version of a chat box. You often see chat boxes used in customer service to automatically generate answers for popular user questions.

The GPT stands for Generative Pre-Trains Transformer. It’s an AI (artificial intelligence) tool created by the company OpenAI that constantly engages with and learns from human interactions so it can produce the best results.

When you type in a question to ChatGPT, you’ll get answers, ideas, prompts, etc. It’s so advanced that you can use it to plan your next trip.

Why use ChatGPT to plan a trip

When you plan a trip using ChatGPT, you’ll get more results faster than searching through Google or endless blogs.

For example, if you search online for the best places to travel to in August, you’ll just get a list of 10+ websites to look through. However, Chat GPT gives you a detailed list of places (such as Santorini, Greece; Bali, Indonesia; and Prague, Czech Republic) with brief descriptions of each destination. This detailed list will keep you from needing to spend time looking through various websites.

In addition, it can help you research potential destinations when you’re unsure of where to go. You can start by typing in what you want. For example, you type, “I want to go somewhere sunny and warm with exciting nightlife.” ChatGPT will search the internet to give you a detailed list of places that meet your expectations.

Some additional questions you can ask include:

  • I’m looking to travel to places where the beach has fine sand and warm waters. Can you recommend some places?
  • Where can I travel to and go scuba diving?
  • Where are the best destinations to travel to in August?
  • Where are safe places for solo female travelers?
  • Where can I travel to for under $2,000?

Create a travel itinerary with ChatGPT

Once you’ve found your travel destination, ChatGPT can help you plan your itinerary.

Here are the results for a 5-day itinerary to Valencia, Spain.

The itinerary will primarily be around popular attractions. If you have specific needs or limitations with your travel planning, make sure you include that in your search.

For instance, you can use the following prompts:

  • Can you plan a 5-day itinerary for a trip to Paris for someone who doesn’t like being outdoors?
  • Can you help me design a trip to Scottsdale, Arizona, with many nature experiences?
  • What are some historical Black places I can visit in the United States?
  • Where can I find Black-owned businesses in New York City?
  • What should I pack for a trip to Iceland in November?

Create travel content

In today’s social media society, if you don’t post about your trip, it’s as if it didn’t happen. Content creation has become crucial to developing one’s brand and business. So if you’re looking for a way to show off your trip, whether on your Instagram feed or through an old fashion PowerPoint slide, AI can help with that.

Some suggested prompts include:

  • What are some Instagram reel ideas for my trip to Italy?
  • Can you give me some blog post ideas for my trip to Japan?
  • What is the best platform to show off my vacation pictures?

The downside of using ChatGPT

While ChatGPT can deliver detailed information quickly, you still have to do some leg work. Booking lodging, transportation, events, and activities aren’t part of ChatGPT’s capabilities (yet).. While some sites like Expedia can transfer the chat information to their site, you still have to make arrangements on your own.

In addition, while you can mention your preferences to ChatGPT, the AI bot may not be able to meet your specific needs and preferences. For instance, if you type in that you’re looking for a local experience, ChatGPT can interpret that in many ways.

For instance, some suggestions about a local experience in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, include exploring neighborhoods outside the hotel areas. While this is a genuine way to interact with more locals, the AI doesn’t know which communities are safe to explore. Therefore, cross-reference your information with locals, other travelers, and travel safety sites.

Along with additional research, remember to check important details such as hours of operation, holidays, costs, and weather.

It’s also important to note that ChatGPT won’t help you if there’s an emergency. Ensure you know who to contact if your baggage is lost; your wallet goes missing; you become sick, etc.

ChatGPT’s knowledge is only internet deep. A lot of the information you’re getting comes from a place of general knowledge. Thus if you’re a BIPOC traveler, you know some destinations are more inviting than others. When looking for the best insights, asking locals or talking to people on the ground is still best.

No matter how sophisticated ChatGPT is, it’s still a machine. The system can sometimes become overloaded and produce errors.

Lastly, ChatGPT is not a person. It has not traveled the world. When planning a trip, make sure to interact with real people. Working with travel agents and coaches will help you have a memorable trip.
