Paramount announced the premiere date for its six-episode docuseries, Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story. Set your DVRs to the Paramount Network on July 30 at 10 pm. Here’s the trailer released this week.
The documentary traces the real-life story of the iconic Black teen whose death turned the hoodie into a garment of rebellion and forced the nation to look closer at the racist implications of gun violence in America. Martin was shot by George Zimmerman who deemed the teen a threat based on his dark skin and hoodie. Zimmerman shot Martin dead but was acquitted by a Florida criminal court. The murder and acquittal ignited the Black Lives Matter Movement that was already gearing up.
Rest in Power is based on a book of the same name by Sybrina Fulton and Tracie Martin. Jay-Z and the Weinstein company won the rights to the book and Jay-Z went on to collaborate with Paramount for the series. You can see learn more about the docuseries at the website Paramount created for the film.
