SYFY is debuting a new show during this year’s 31 Days of Halloween: Superstition. The channel is known for science fiction, fantasy, horror and paranormal content. Superstition seems to be a mix of the latter two. According to the show’s page:

Superstition will follow the Hastings, a family who’s owned the only funeral home and graveyard in the town of La Rochelle for as long as anyone can recall. In addition to providing services for all faiths, the family specialty is handling “afterlife care” for the unexplained deaths of folks at the hands of demonic entities, and other unworldly phenomena that have long haunted the town. The Hastings uses arcane weaponry, incredible strength, mystical alchemy skills, and a deep knowledge of the occult and ancient lore from around the world to quell the evil within the shadows of the town.

As someone who’s been a fan of Supernatural since 2008, I’m so excited for a show that combines arcana and demon-hunting families—with a majority Black cast. That’s right, Superstition’s about a majority Black family who runs a mortuary and protects the town using their knowledge of occultism and demonology.

Umm, I don’t know about you, but I’d work at that mortuary in an instant.

The show’s cast includes director Mario Van Peebles (New Jack City, The Last Ship, Roots, Ali), who will be directing some Superstition episodes.

I’m most excited to see Demetria McKinney (Tyler Perry’s House of Payne), Brad James (Underground), and newcomer Morgana Van Peebles, who at 19 is best known for her role as Malcolm X’s daughter in 2001’s Ali, but has been in a couple other productions such as the TV mini-series Chasing Shadows and the documentary short Bring Your ‘A’ Game. These actors aren’t particularly known for the horror/paranormal genre, so I can’t wait to see what they’ll bring to the table!

W. Earl Brown (Preacher and Knights of Badsassdom), Diamond Dallas Page (semi-retired WWE wrestler), Robinne Lee (Fifty Shades Darker, Tyler Perry’s House of Payne), T.C. Carter, and Tatiana Lia Zappardino also round out the cast.
