Blumhouse is back to frighten us again with a new horror film coming soon to theaters on August 30th. Their latest movie is aptly titled Afraid. Audiences should prepare to be afraid of what is to come in this story about the real-life fear and anxiety surrounding artificial intelligence otherwise known as AI. So what is this movie about and why should we be “afraid”?

Before we dive into what we know so far, one thing is for certain is that the future of AI is still an enigma, and how advanced this tech will develop and manifest in our lives can be a cause for concern. Afraid explores what happens when we are too tethered to AI and allow digital assistants to be a part of homes and personal lives. Handing over control to our devices may actually leave us out of control is something to really be afraid of. And that’s what this Blumhouse thriller will dig into. Afraid will certainly be a conversation starter as people leave the theater discussing what they would do if they were stuck in these situations which have real-life parallels. Here’s what we know so far about the Blumhouse thriller Afraid.

What is it about?

Curtis (John Cho) and his family are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: a digital family assistant called AIA. Taking smart homes to the next level, once the unit and all its sensors and cameras are installed in their home, AIA seems able to do it all. She learns the family’s behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing – and no one – gets in her family’s way. If the movie M3GAN  had you concerned about the future of tech, Afraid is about to take it a step further.

Who is in the movie?

The film stars John Cho, Katherine Waterston, Havana Rose Liu, Lukita Maxwell, with David Dastmalchian and Keith Carradine to name a few.

What’s so scary about AIA?

In the movie trailer for Afraid, there are a few of the fear-inducing moments. AIA takes over a self-driving car, much to its driver’s dismay.  AIA also bonds with the youngest  child in the family (Isaac Bae) with some deeply disturbing screen time. It’s clear AIA has a mind of her own, but not at all clear what she wants…

When does it come out?

Afraid premieres in theaters August 30th. It’s coming soon!
