6 Romance Writers Every Black Girl Nerd Should Know

Spread the love

When I think of romance novels, a book cover with a tan, shirtless, and long-haired white man gracefully holding some fragile woman in his arms often comes to mind. This image is so prevalent because novels with supermodel-like characters who meet and have this blissful, happily-ever-after story dominate the romance genre.

From time to time, I question the diversity within this section of literature. Are their stories of confident, clever, and beautiful Black women finding the love of their lives? What about a romance story that talks about the butterflies in your stomach type of love but also talks about the frustrating and messy sides of relationships? I was curious to find authors who told stories with authentic characters, had quirky hobbies, and pursued love and their careers.

Fortunately, I’ve found stories like this, and here is a list of the authors who wrote them.

Black Romance Authors You Can’t Overlook

These authors recognized a need for more diversity in the romance genre. They decided to fill that gap with their unique, witty, and beautiful stories that celebrate the importance and beauty of Black love.

1. Beverly Jenkins

Beverly Jenkins‘ books are a must-read for history buffs with a soft spot for romance. As a favorite among many readers, Jenkins illuminates the often-overlooked history of Black America through captivating stories.

Reading her books will make your heart swoon while stimulating your mind. What is particularly entrancing about Jenkin’s books are the lead female characters. The women in her stories are independent and resourceful, and they believe in creating their own destiny instead of waiting for life to happen. Yet, while her characters are determined to make a life of their own, there is still time for romance. Her books show that strong and independent women are worthy of love, too.

Some books of hers to add to your bookshelf include:

  • Indigo
  • Destiny’s Embrace
  • Forbidden

2. Talia Hibbert

Talia Hibbert is a witty and fresh voice in the romance genre. She is another author who features Black women as main characters. Additionally, her books focus on intersectionality, with stories about body positivity, neurodiversity, and Black women who don’t identify with mainstream ideologies.

What makes Hibbert’s stories relatable, particularly for Blerds, are the characters with unique hobbies and interests such as gaming, fandoms, and literature. You’ll feel like you could easily be best friends with her characters. She portrays protagonists as intelligent, bookish, and nerdy.

As you delve into the pages, you’ll find yourself relating to and understanding the main characters.

Hibbert also creates a humorous dialogue that enhances the reading experience. She weaves jokes into her stories that readers, particularly those of nerd culture, will understand.

To start reading her fascinating novels, make sure you check out the following books:

  • Get a Life, Chloe Brown
  • The Roommate Risk
  • Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute

3. Brenda Jackson

Many romance novels portray overly exaggerated love stories. While there is nothing wrong with grand gestures of affection, love stories in real life aren’t fairy tales. Sometimes, it’s nice to read authentic love stories. Fortunately, author Brenda Jackson provides that.

Readers can see the highs and the lows of romantic partnerships within her stories. Her characters aren’t some couple that falls in love in a beautiful paradise with nothing to focus on but each other. Instead, her books star partners who fall in love and try to make their relationships work while navigating career challenges, personal growth, and family dynamics.

Her books are for the hopeful yet realistic romantic. If you know that relationships take work and believe that, in the end, love will conquer all, then Jackson’s books are meant for you. Some books you’ll want to pick up and never put down include:

  • A Man’s Promise
