LightReel Film Festival: Where Cinema Meets Culture, Craft, and Community in the Heart of DC

The LightReel Film Festival, Washington, DC’s premier multicultural film festival, is officially turning the spotlight toward its most anticipated offering yet: the complete lineup for its signature IndustryInsights program, a dynamic series of panels, intimate conversations, and craft-driven sessions that put filmmakers face-to-face with the voices shaping the industry.

Returning for its 7th annual edition, June 3–6, 2026, at the Angelika Pop-Up at Union Market, this year’s festival theme, From the District to the Diaspora, signals exactly what LightReel does best: bridging worlds, amplifying voices, and centering storytelling as a cultural force.

“The LightReel ‘Talk Series’ is the soul of our festival,” says Tim Gordon, Executive Director of LightReel and Founder of the Black Reel Awards. “It’s where movies turn into real conversations.”

And this year, those conversations are stacked.

Where the Craft Comes Alive

IndustryInsights launches Friday, June 5 with “Editing Action!”, a high-energy clips and conversation session featuring Emmy winner Stephanie Filo (Daredevil: Born Again), setting the tone for a weekend rooted in the artistry behind the frame.

From there, the programming leans deep into storytelling as craft and culture, including MahoganyBooks’ co-presented panel “Adapting Romance” with Emmy-nominated editor Terilyn A. Shropshire (Children of Bone and Blood), hosted by Talia Cadet. Expect a conversation that explores how love stories are reshaped for screen, and how emotional truth survives adaptation.

LightReel also expands its cultural lens with Edible DC’s “Food on Film” series, because storytelling does not just live in dialogue, it lives in flavor, memory, and shared experience. And for the fandom crowd, the festival is serving up a live-action One Piece screening and cosplay activation co-presented by Fantom Comics, blending anime passion with community celebration.

Across Songbyrd Union Market and festival spaces, IndustryInsights becomes more than programming. It becomes a living dialogue between creators and the audiences who love them.

The Catalyst Series: Where Icons Collide

One of LightReel’s most electric offerings returns with The Catalyst @ The Balcón, a signature conversation series pairing artists whose careers and creative philosophies spark something bigger than nostalgia. Co-presented by the Black Reel Awards, these Saturday sessions are built for film lovers who care about how the magic is made.

On June 6 at 1:30 PM, Black Women Editors Shaping the Frame brings together Terilyn A. Shropshire, ACE and Stephanie Filo, ACE for a conversation on rhythm, emotion, performance, and the invisible architecture of storytelling.

Later that day at 3:00 PM, The Sound of Legacy unites two giants of cinema sound, Russell Williams II and Willie D. Burton, two of only five Black artists to win two Academy Awards, for a rare reflection on innovation, legacy, and the evolution of sound in film.

In Conversation: The Story Behind the Story

LightReel’s intimate one-on-one series, co-presented with the Black Reel Awards and ALIVE Podcast Network, brings audiences closer to the architects of culture.

Highlights include conversations with documentary filmmaker Kirk Fraser, media entrepreneur Angel Livas, and dual sessions featuring Oscar-winning sound mixers Russell Williams II and Willie D. Burton, each offering a masterclass in craft, career, and creative endurance.

Podcast-in-Residence: The Culture Garden

This year also marks the arrival of The Culture Garden as LightReel’s official Podcast-in-Residence, featuring Kieron Richardson, Rachel Proctor, and Isaiah Jackson across all four days of the festival, bringing live commentary, cultural analysis, and community dialogue directly into the festival experience.

“This is the most extraordinary group of industry voices we have ever assembled,” says Gordon. “Each of these individuals has expanded what is possible for Black artists in Hollywood.”

With four Academy Award winners, an Emmy-winning roster of creatives, pioneering filmmakers, and cultural innovators, LightReel 2026 is shaping up to be less of a festival and more of a creative convergence.

And for fans, creators, and storytellers alike, that is exactly the point.
