Your favorite streaming stars are getting off the couch and onto the field. And yes, there is a golden remote involved.
Roku has announced Battle of the Streaming Stars, a new competition series from Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, with Terry Crews set to host and executive produce. The first of two hour-long specials premieres October 23 exclusively on The Roku Channel, with a second arriving in early 2027.
For anyone who remembers Battle of the Network Stars, the concept will sound familiar. Nearly five decades after the original brought television personalities together to compete for network bragging rights, Roku is giving the format a streaming-era makeover. This time, comedians, actors, reality stars, and creators will face off in larger-than-life challenges inspired by the shows and movies audiences love.
In each special, three teams of four will compete across several rounds for the Golden Roku Remote. Because apparently, fighting over the remote is now a professional sport.
The lineup already gives us plenty of reasons to tune in. Crews will lead the action, while Kay Adams brings her sports expertise to the sidelines, tracking the strategy and inevitable smack talk. Meanwhile, Yvette Nicole Brown will serve as referee, keeping both the competition and the celebrity egos in check.
Brown holding the whistle while Crews presides over a field full of competitive entertainers? We are going to need those reaction shots.
The competitors for the first special have yet to be revealed, with announcements expected in the coming weeks. That leaves plenty of room for fandom speculation about who will show up, who will surprise us, and who will take a recreational challenge entirely too seriously.
According to Brian Tannenbaum, Head of Roku Originals at Roku Media, the series will carry forward the original show’s celebration of television while reflecting how audiences watch entertainment today. With personalities now spread across streaming platforms, the format offers a chance to bring them together for a shared spectacle.
Manning is also tapping into the nostalgia behind the project.
“‘Battle of the Network Stars’ was must-watch TV in the 80s,” he said. “We’re excited to team up with Roku to bring that same concept back for the streaming era.”
For Crews, the appeal includes finding out whether all that confidence translates into actual athletic ability.
“Some of the funniest, most competitive people in entertainment finally get to prove who’s the best athlete in the room, and trust me, egos are going to get tested,” Crews said.
There is something appealing about watching people we usually associate with scripted drama, comedy, or reality television attempt to win a physical challenge with their pride on the line. The performances might be polished on their respective shows, but a competition has a way of revealing who can handle pressure and who immediately starts arguing with the referee.
And with Brown overseeing the rules, those arguments could become entertainment all their own.
Battle of the Streaming Stars is produced by Omaha Productions, with Peyton Manning, Jamie Horowitz, Colin Campbell, and Dan Gati executive producing. Keith Geller serves as showrunner, while Sean Boyle and Louisa L. Friedman oversee the project for Roku Originals.
The first special arrives October 23 on The Roku Channel. Until the teams are announced, we’ll be waiting to see which fandom gets to claim bragging rights and which stars discover that winning a Golden Roku Remote takes more than screen presence.
