Fantastic Fest 2022 Review: ‘The Visitor from the Future’ is a Wacky New Comedy You Must Watch

Talk about a whirlwind through time! The Visitor from the Future is officially the heartwarming comedy we all need in 2022.

Let’s just say you’ll need to hold on to your seat because viewers are taken on a rollercoaster ride through time and back in this hilarious, fun dystopian comedy! In case you missed it, in an exclusive Q&A, Director François Descraques confirmed that the opportunity to screen The Visitor from the Future at Fantastic Fest had been his lifelong dream. In fact, the movie’s premiere at the festival was also his first feature. I have to say — what a way to set the bar high!

The French film’s success didn’t start here in the States though!  Also known as Le Visiteur Du Futur, the comedy had already made sensational waves across the pond. The movie was highly anticipated since it was adapted from the immensely successful web series of the same name, which was created by brothers Raphaël and François Descraques and leading man, Florent Dorin! The movie is particularly popular in France — which comes as no surprise — and premiered in theaters on September 7, 2022.

In The Visitor from the Future, we meet Alice (Enya Baroux). She is an “eco-activist fighting against the construction of a power plant, a project led by her father. Her worst fears about a pending climate disaster are confirmed when a snarky, nameless time traveler (Florent Dorin) pays her a visit… to kill her dad. Instead, he takes both of them to the future — the year 2555, to be exact — to witness the aftermath of an explosion at that very same power plant that eradicates most of life on Earth.”

Initially considered an underdog amongst other notable films at Fantastic Fest, it’s safe to say The Visitor from the Future won the hearts of even the most critical movie-goers! From roaring laughter to even the most sentimental hidden tear, this wacky film gave remarkable nods to many clever easter eggs, including The Princess Bride and Back to the Future.

As the movie unfolds, many circumstances challenge viewers from a moral and existential perspective. Throughout its progression, one may often find themselves at odds with what they would do in the central characters’ shoes and what they may do differently.

More notably, the movie puts humanity’s most precious asset into a deeper perspective: time. After all, how many days, weeks, and years do we find ourselves asking what we could have done if we had more time?

How often do we find ourselves frustrated with individuals, governments, systems, and institutions for robbing us of precious time? Heck, how often do we kick ourselves for letting time go by the wayside due to constant procrastination?

If there is anything that we need more of, it has always been time. Time to right our wrongs, time to make amends, and time to have more meaningful relationships.

By the screening’s riveting end, the energy in the room was palpable and it became evident that viewers had the same question in mind: how would our decisions change if we truly grasped the extent and impact of even the tiniest mistakes?

The trickle effect of our reckless thinking or spur-of-the-moment decisions is something that we often underestimate, and The Visitor from the Future presents a powerful reminder. Regardless of the size of our actions and regardless of our intentions – both good and bad, there will always be an impact.

Now don’t freak out about that cup of coffee you just purchased or about that driver you just flicked off this morning (but maybe try not to do the latter again), but the reality is that even if you think your actions won’t affect someone else or something else…they will always affect YOU in ways you don’t realize.

You see, with that precious thing called time, our actions can become an integral part of who we are and even a reflection of who we are to others.

Unexpectedly, the movie reminds us why self-awareness and accountability are such critical components of our personal growth. After all, do we honestly want the innermost part of who we are to be misrepresented by how others may perceive us from the outside?

Didn’t think so!

I bet you also didn’t think that this review would be this deep, huh?

WELL, NEITHER DID I!

Seriously! I did not think, even for a minute, that I would walk out of the premiere finding myself rethinking life as it was, as it is, and as it could be. Who’s to blame for all this? This brilliant, talented cast of misfits – that’s who! And that’s exactly why you need to see this film.

It’ll uplift you, it’ll challenge you, and have you in a laughing fit all at the same time! In short, this film was MAGNIFIQUE and deserves a strong 4-star rating!
