In Marvel’s gritty revival series Daredevil: Born Again, one of the most intriguing breakout characters isn’t a masked vigilante or a crime boss. It’s BB Urich, played with sharp intensity by Genneya Walton.

Following a standout debut in Season 1, Walton’s portrayal of BB quickly cemented her as a key player in a world defined by power, corruption, and blurred moral lines. In an exclusive Black Girl Nerds’ interview with Walton over email, the actress opened up about BB’s evolution heading into Season 2 and why her journey might be one of the show’s most compelling arcs.

BB made a strong impression in Season 1. How would you describe her evolution going into Season 2?

Towards the end of season one we got the reveal on what BB’s motives were all along. She plays both sides in very much of a, “keep your friends close and your enemies closer” kind of way. In season 2 we get to see that develop. BB has gotten herself into the belly of the beast and is now working for Fisk’s administration. Her BB reports are no longer in her creative control, and she is essentially pumping out propaganda. She always has a trick up her sleeve, and you can be sure that if she is doing something out of the ordinary for her, she is surely countering it with something equally or even greater of a push back. Her moves this season are risky, bold, and calculated.

What new layers of BB’s personality or backstory are we going to see this season?

We get to see BB struggle a bit between sticking to her plan and looking out for someone that she grew to care about. BB is very strong minded and focused on her end goal for her uncle and all of those affected by Fisk’s reign, but her unexpected care for another character takes her out of her tunnel vision at the most unexpected moment.

BB operates in a world full of morally gray characters. How does she define her own sense of right and wrong?

BB has always had a mission and she sticks to it. She is the voice of the people and is very aware of the risks that come with that position. Speaking truth to power and seeking justice for her uncle and those who found a similar fate is her ultimate goal. I admire her courage, care, and focus towards that. She plays the long game and though she may use others to get her way, deep in her heart she believes that every move she makes is for the best for all and the bigger picture. Whether or not the outsider looking in agrees , she moves with good intentions.

How do BB’s relationships shift in Season 2, especially as tensions rise in New York?

BB’s relationship with Daniel really unfolds this season. With them ultimately fighting for different sides as Fisk’s power grows and the resistance begins to rise against them there is such a dilemma for both of them to choose where they will land and what they are willing to sacrifice in the name of the game.

Without spoilers, is there a relationship that surprised you in how it develops?

BB and Daniel have such an interesting dynamic together that plays out in such a shocking way that I am truly excited for everyone to see. Michael (Gandolfini) and I have been rooting for them since season 1!

What themes does BB’s storyline explore this season that feel especially relevant right now?

Speaking out against corruption is a major theme in BB’s storyline. Those in power stay in power and many under that are forgotten unless something is done. Daredevil season two plays with the idea of power vs. resistance. We are in a very specific time in history right now and it is a privilege to be a part of something that brings to light any current issues and may inspire viewers to work towards a change.

Are there any connections or Easter eggs involving BB that fans should keep an eye out for?

BB is full of secrets. Keep your eyes and ears open 🙂

What do you hope audiences take away from BB’s journey this season?

I hope that people are inspired to improve the lives of others around them. There is power in numbers and if we want to see change in the world we must continue together. Be bold and be kind. Uplifting one another does not require major moves like BB’s. There are several opportunities each day to make another person’s day brighter than before when you leave yourself open to a connection with others.
