The Comic Shop, an independently produced workplace comedy from creator and showrunner Cheyenne Ewulu, is currently in post-production after raising over $207,000 on Kickstarter — one of the highest-funded independent TV projects on the platform to date. The series is produced under Ewulu’s Awkward Virgo Productions.
Set inside a fictional Los Angeles comic book store, The Comic Shop follows a group of quirky employees doing everything they can to keep their beloved shop alive in the face of corporate competition, absurd customers, and their own chaotic dynamics.
Ewulu stars in the lead role alongside Zeno Robinson (My Hero Academia, Transformers: EarthSpark), Shanae Cole (Grown-ish), and Grayson Niles (The Party, The Goldbergs).
Khary Payton (The Walking Dead, Teen Titans Go!) and Hayley Law (Riverdale, Door Mouse) guest star in key episodes, with Rahul Kohli (Midnight Mass, iZombie) making a special cameo appearance. JB Blanc (Breaking Bad, Arcane) also appears in the series as the shop’s increasingly frustrated landlord, Kevin.
“These are amazing actors and I’m excited to have them in the show and along for the ride,” said Ewulu. “Filming with them was a dream.”
The series features a lineup of directors including Dani Fernandez (Ralph Breaks the Internet) and Alanah Pearce (V/H/S/Beyond), both of whom also appear in the show. Additional episodes are directed by Jalen Blot (ColorCreative Find Your People Cohort 2), Tari Wariebi (ColorCreative), and more.
Adding to the show’s distinct tone, viral rap duo Flyana Boss is set to perform the series’ original theme song.
The project gained early attention after its proof-of-concept trailer went viral online, sparking support from fans, influencers, and creators across the TV/Film and geek communities. Its Kickstarter campaign brought in over 1,700 backers and surpassed its funding goal by nearly 30 percent.
Though a distribution deal has not yet been announced, The Comic Shop has already built a passionate audience eager for its release.
Awkward Virgo Productions was founded by Ewulu to spotlight inclusive, character-driven stories. The Comic Shop is the company’s debut scripted series.
