In the world of The Boys, few unresolved threads carry as much volatile weight as the one between Soldier Boy and Homelander. It is not just a clash of personalities or power levels, but a generational fracture between two versions of manufactured heroism, both shaped by violence, branding, and abandonment. And according to Jensen Ackles, that fracture is far from healed.
Speaking in a recent Black Girl Nerds interview, Ackles revisited where things left off for Soldier Boy after the explosive events at Vought Tower. The character’s trajectory has always been defined by displacement, but now that dislocation has reached a more surreal and psychologically charged point; waking up inside Homelander’s house. It is an image that feels almost symbolic in its discomfort, like a relic of one era suddenly dropped into the center of another man’s empire.
Ackles does not frame Soldier Boy as a man with a clear plan. Instead, he describes someone still processing the collapse of his last confrontation and trying to make sense of what remains. As he put it, the fallout from Vought Tower left everything unstable, with “a lot of questions to be answered.” That uncertainty is the point.
Soldier Boy has always been defined by a kind of temporal exile. Even before his return to the modern world, he existed as a figure who no longer fit the mythology built around him. In many ways, he is less a hero than a relic, one that the present world neither knows how to fully contain nor completely discard. Ackles leans into this tension, describing him as “a fish out of water,” a man fundamentally misaligned with the environment he has been forced back into.
That misalignment is what makes the looming question so compelling. Does Soldier Boy attempt to reintegrate himself into a world that has already moved past him, or does he retreat back into isolation, unmoored and unpredictable? Ackles leaves both possibilities open, even hinting that whatever comes next may not be easily categorized as heroism or villainy.
This is where the emotional stakes of Soldier Boy’s arc begin to sharpen. His conflict with Homelander is about identity. Both characters represent distorted versions of American exceptionalism, but they diverge in how they respond to obsolescence. Homelander clings tighter and Soldier Boy unravels.
And now, placed literally inside Homelander’s space, that contrast becomes unavoidable.
What makes this storyline so effective is the refusal to settle. Soldier Boy’s return intensifies contradiction. He is a man surrounded by questions he may not care to answer, and a world that no longer has a clear place for him. Whether he stays to confront that reality or walks away entirely may ultimately define not just his arc, but the next escalation of a conflict that has never been about closure in the first place.
