Netflix is taking fans back to Hillman College. The streamer announced that it has officially ordered A Different World, a brand-new sequel series inspired by the beloved ’90s sitcom that helped define a generation of Black television. This time, the story follows the newest Wayne-Gilbert making her mark on campus and proving that legacy is both a blessing and a burden.
At the center of the story is Deborah Wayne, played by Broadway breakout Maleah Joi Moon (Hell’s Kitchen). As the youngest daughter of TV royalty Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, Deborah is equal parts rebellious, free-spirited, and determined. Entering her freshman year at Hillman, she’s ready to carve out her own identity while still having the absolute time of her life. But escaping her parents’ shadow? That’s another story entirely.
Behind the scenes, Netflix is assembling a powerhouse team that bridges the original series with a new creative era. Felicia Pride (Grey’s Anatomy, Queen Sugar) will serve as Showrunner, Executive Producer, and Writer, bringing her thoughtful character-driven storytelling to Hillman’s next class. And in a legacy-defining move, Debbie Allen — who directed a remarkable 83 episodes of the original series — returns as Director and Executive Producer. Allen is set to helm three episodes, including the premiere, promising a tone and spirit deeply rooted in what made the original so iconic.
The sequel also brings back two of the original series’ most influential creative voices. Reggie Rock Bythewood (Swagger, Shots Fired) and Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King, Love & Basketball) return as Executive Producers, ensuring this new chapter remains connected to the heart and cultural impact of the Hillman we know and love. They join fellow Executive Producers Mandy Summers (That ’90s Show) and Tom Werner (The Conners, Roseanne).

Rounding out Hillman’s newest class is an exciting young cast ready to carry the mantle:
- Alijah Kai Haggins (Everybody Hates Chris) as Rashida
- Cornell Young (Doing Life) as Shaquille
- Kennedi Reece as Hazel
- Jordan Aaron Hall (The Idea of You) as Amir
- Chibuikem Uche (One Of Us Is Lying) as Kojo
With its 10-episode, single-camera, half-hour format, the sequel promises a contemporary lens on campus life while honoring the vibrant, culturally grounded storytelling of the original. Early glimpses suggest a series that balances laugh-out-loud humor with heartfelt coming-of-age journeys very much in line with A Different World’s legacy of tackling real issues with care and authenticity.
A Different World joins a rising comedy slate at Netflix, standing alongside acclaimed titles like Nobody Wants This, The Vince Staples Show, A Man on the Inside, Emily in Paris, and Survival of the Thickest. For longtime fans and new audiences alike, the return to Hillman feels both nostalgic and right on time.
Class is officially back in session.
