This has been the week of Netflix news. Perhaps their biggest coup is coaxing Shonda Rhimes away from ABC. It was announced yesterday that they signed her to a multi-year deal. Don’t worry, she’s not abandoning her current ABC shows. Read our coverage of it here. Netflix also purchased comic book writer Mark Millar’s imprint, Millarworld. Millar is best known for Kingsman: The Secret Society, the theatrical sequel of which is being released soon, and Kick Ass. Netflix plans to make movies, TV shows and children’s programming from his material. Not to be outdone, The Walking Dead‘s Robert Kirkman signed a deal with Amazon Studios for his imprint Skybound Entertainment.
Ava DuVernay is adapting Octavia Butler’s 1987 science fiction classic Dawn for television. DuVernay and Charles D. King will serve as executive producers for the series. DuVernay recently spoke at the Black Star Film festival. Check out BGN’s coverage of it.
In Movie News…

A new expanded poster of Warner Bros.’ Justice League has been released. Also making its way across the internet this week was a rumor that the reshoots of this movie aren’t just a few cosmetic changes. Apparently, the original was ‘unwatchable’. Issues with the dark tone and the portrayal of Cyborg were two of the reasons cited. Joss Whedon stepped in to replace Zack Snyder after he stepped down following a family tragedy, is possibly shooting an entirely new movie.
On the other side of the superhero world, in the wake of Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s success Sony Pictures is starting their own connected cinematic universe. Venom is set to be released next year. Rogue One star and general BGN bae, Riz Ahmed is in early talks to star in it. The rumor is that he may be Carnage. Silver and Black, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, was given a release date of February 8, 2019. It follows the characters Silver Sable and Black Cat from the Spider-Man universe.
Entertainment Weekly has spent this week covering almost every aspect of The Last Jedi from the creatures to the arc of main characters. If you want to remain unspoiled, avoid at all cost. If you’re curious, check out our coverage here and here. Finally in the animated world, Alfre Woodard joined the cast of Disney’s live action Lion King remake as Simba’s mother.
