Kicking off the BlackStar Film Festival on Thursday was the panel Revisioning ‘A Different World‘ presented by Netflix.
Showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride and director of cinematography Shawn Peters discussed the highly anticipated reboot of A Different World and the enduring influence of the beloved series. First premiering in 1987 as a spinoff of the industry-altering series The Cosby Show, A Different World transformed TV’s portrayal of college life at historically Black campuses, creating space for stories that resonated across generations.
Along with actor Jordan Aaron Hall, who plays the character of Amir, the panel not only touched on the original show’s cultural impact, but explored the creative process behind reimagining it for today’s audiences with special attention paid to the look of the series, and new characters. The reboot continues the tradition of telling nuanced, aspirational and deeply relevant stories about intergenerational Black life.
