Corlys Velaryon has always been one of the most calculating figures in House of the Dragon, but Season 3 finds the legendary Sea Snake navigating unfamiliar waters. In an interview with Black Girl Nerds, Steve Toussaint discussed how devastating loss reshapes Corlys, fueling his anger while forcing him to confront his failures as a father.
For much of House of the Dragon, Corlys Velaryon has been defined by ambition, strategy, and an unwavering devotion to his family’s legacy. But according to Steve Toussaint, Season 3 strips away much of what made the Lord of the Tides so formidable, leaving a man consumed by grief and searching for purpose amid unimaginable loss.
Speaking with Black Girl Nerds, Toussaint explained that Corlys’ emotional transformation begins after the devastating Battle of the Gullet.
“Where it suddenly comes into fore is after the battle, where he’s left alone with his grief,” Toussaint said. “I think his grief turns to a sense of grievance and rage. He ends up taking it out on the enemy.
Rather than allowing Corlys to simply mourn, Season 3 channels that heartbreak into vengeance. It’s an evolution that feels fitting for a character who has spent decades believing he could outmaneuver fate. Now, with so much taken from him, grief becomes another weapon in the ongoing civil war.

A Father Trying to Make Up for Lost Time
While Corlys wages war against his enemies, he’s also fighting a far more personal battle—building a relationship with his son, Alyn.
Toussaint explained that Corlys recognizes how much has changed. The titles, wealth, and inheritance he once intended to pass down have largely disappeared.
“He’s reaching out and trying to do his very best to forge a relationship with his son,” Toussaint said. “Once upon a time, he would’ve gone, ‘You are now the new Master of the Tides. Driftmark is yours.’ Well, there is no Driftmark. So now all I have left is my name and my position.”
Instead of handing Alyn an established legacy, Corlys must prepare him to create one of his own. It’s a far more vulnerable role for the famed sailor, whose confidence has often masked his emotional shortcomings.
Toussaint noted that Corlys wants to place Alyn in a position where he can ultimately succeed on his own merits rather than relying solely on the Velaryon name.

More Than Politics
One of the quieter moments in Season 3 highlights the growing bond between father and son. Toussaint teased a scene where Corlys compliments Alyn’s noble attire, only for Alyn to admit he doesn’t feel like he belongs.
Corlys reassures him that he’ll eventually find his place, revealing a rare moment of tenderness.
For Toussaint, that interaction underscores an important truth about Corlys.
“Much as Corlys is very good at politics, I don’t think he likes politics very much,” he explained. “I think he sees exactly the same quality in his son.”
It’s an insightful observation that reframes Corlys’ journey throughout the series. Despite his reputation as one of Westeros’ greatest political minds, his true passion has always been exploration, the sea, and building something lasting for his family—not navigating court intrigue.
As Season 3 unfolds, those priorities are tested more than ever. Corlys is no longer simply protecting House Velaryon; he’s trying to preserve what’s left of it while ensuring Alyn is prepared to carry the family’s legacy into an uncertain future.
If Toussaint’s comments are any indication, Season 3 will showcase one of Corlys Velaryon’s most emotionally layered performances yet, balancing vengeance, regret, and fatherhood against the backdrop of a kingdom tearing itself apart.
