X-Teens? Youngling mutants? Call them what you will, but teen mutants are back on Fox in a new series premiering later this year which proclaims them as The Gifted. No, not “gifted” as in getting a perfect score on their SAT while playing “Ravel’s Tzigane” on the violin (and, yeah, I had to look that up). “Gifted” as in they are likely going to end up invited to “Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters”.
The official trailer for The Gifted dropped late Sunday night (May 14) and it was packed with intriguing visuals (including a couple that were weirdly Carrie-esque. Will bullies never learn?). Tense exchanges between nervous family members and government officials whose actions seem to seem to blur the lines between good guys and bad guys were interspersed with scenes of the family on the run. But what’s this? Dad is a member of a police force that hunts mutants? This is complicated! But then, the family who is at the heart of the series’ action bears the last name Strucker. And with a name like that, at least in the Marvel Universe, life has got to be complicated.
The action-adventure series focuses on a suburban couple (played by True Blood‘s Stephen Moyer and Person of Interest‘s Amy Acker) whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children (The Goldbergs‘ Natalie Alyn Lind and Between’s Percy Hynes White) possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.
The show is written by Matt Nix Burn Notice, directed by Bryan Singer (the X-Men franchise and executive-produced by Nix, Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner (X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Wolverine), Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men: Days of Future Pas)t, Jeph Loeb Marvel’s (Daredevil, Marvel’s Jessica Jones), and Jim Chory (Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Jessica Jones).
