At a time when fantasy films are leaning deeper into emotional stakes and personal transformation, Alison Brie says the upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe taps into themes that feel surprisingly human beneath the spectacle.

During an interview with Black Girl Nerds, Brie reflected on stepping into the role of Evil-Lyn, one of the franchise’s most iconic and morally complex characters. When asked which fantasy themes resonated most with her while making the film, Brie immediately pointed to the idea of power.

“I mean, I think a lot about power in terms of my character, because I play Evil-Lyn,” Brie said. “And Evil-Lyn is all about power. She’s drawn to power. It’s why she works alongside Skeletor.”

For longtime fans of the franchise, Evil-Lyn has always existed in the shadow of larger-than-life forces, balancing ambition, loyalty, and survival in a world driven by magic and dominance. Brie’s interpretation appears to lean into that fascination with strength while also giving the character moments of admiration and curiosity.

“But she’s also impressed when anyone else has power, which was a fun part to play,” Brie explained. “She’s impressed by Teela and her strength.”

That appreciation for power extends even to Prince Adam’s transformation into He-Man. Brie joked that Evil-Lyn’s reaction is one of genuine awe, saying, “When Adam transforms into He-Man, she’s like, ‘Oh, look at those fantastic muscles.’”

While the film promises the massive action sequences and fantasy world-building fans expect from Eternia, Brie believes the emotional core of the story centers on something more personal.

“I kind of like that everyone’s striving for this power,” she said. “And I love the message of the movie, which is that ultimately you’ll find the power inside yourself.”

The upcoming adaptation stars Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, Camila Mendes as Teela, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms,  Morena Baccarin as The Sorceress and Jared Leto as Skeletor, with director Travis Knight bringing the beloved franchise back to the big screen. Brie’s comments suggest the film is aiming to balance classic fantasy adventure with themes of identity, confidence, and self-discovery.

For fans eager to see how Evil-Lyn fits into this new vision of Eternia, Brie’s performance may offer a version of the character that is both intimidating and unexpectedly insightful about what power really means.
